A total of no more than 16 top teams from around the world will be invited to enter the 2017 World Championship of Tandem Surfing held this year in Waikiki, Hawaii as part of Duke's Oceanfest. Four (4) finalists from each regional ITSA sanctioned World Tandem Championship Qualifying event will secure an invitation to the championship. If a region does not send all four (4) invited teams to the championship, the ITSA may choose to allocate any remaining invitation(s) to a competing team from the same region or another region (in that specific order) based upon performance at any region's WTCQ contest this year and/or previous competitive record.
Up to four (4) wild cards may be granted to teams that represent a country outside of the established ITSA competition regions of Europe, Hawaii and the USA to encourage global participation in the sport. Wild cards will be granted at the sole discretion of the ITSA and interested teams must both request consideration and meet competitive requirements:

Up to four (4) wild cards may be granted to teams that represent a country outside of the established ITSA competition regions of Europe, Hawaii and the USA to encourage global participation in the sport. Wild cards will be granted at the sole discretion of the ITSA and interested teams must both request consideration and meet competitive requirements:
- Successful completion of two (2) sequences including no less than one (1) overhead lift per sequence to be submitted via video;
- Be in good standing with the organization.
Additional Information on Qualifying for the World Championship of Tandem Surfing
- Teams are eligible to compete in a WTCQ event outside of their home region.
- In the event that a team qualifies in their home region plus another region, the team will automatically accept their home region's invitation to allow fair representation from all regions.
- If a team does not qualify in their home region and qualifies in another region, they are able to receive their invitation from the other region instead.
- If a team receives an invitation and cannot compete for any given reason, their invitation will be extended to the next highest ranked team from their region's WTCQ event.
- Each invitation is earned by the team as a whole and cannot be accepted by only one partner. If there is a partner change, the original team forfeits their invitation and the newly formed team will need to qualify on their own to receive an invitation.
- There may be one more tentative WTCQ event held in Waikiki before the Main Event to fill any remaining invitational openings (at the sole discretion of the ITSA).
