Tandem Surfboards

Tandem surfboards are longer, wider and thicker than traditional longboards because they need to support the weight of two surfers and be stable enough for lifting, while still enabling maneuverability on the waves. Tandem board lengths and sizes vary depending on the combined weight of the team, wave conditions at home/competition surf breaks and desired performance. Some teams prefer more maneuverability vs stability, and vice versa. Increased rocker and a narrower nose may be desired for dropping into bigger waves. Fin setup can also differ, although most teams surf with a single fin. Choosing between fiberglass vs epoxy is also based on personal preference for performance.

Most professional tandem teams ride custom shaped boards now, but for several years our top teams competed on the C4 Waterman Stand'em model (11'6" x 29" x 4 7/8"). It was available internationally at the time and relatively easy to source at World Tandem Tour stops, so it removed the need for teams to ship or travel with their tandem boards. NOTE: Most airlines will not accept tandem boards due to their length or will charge a very high fee to check them as baggage. Some teams have opted to ship their boards in advance for contests.
