What to look for in an ideal male tandem partner

Male tandem partners should be strong surfers and experienced in a variety of surf conditions since they provide the surfing foundation for the team. Overall physical strength is necessary to perform overhead lifts, but acrobatic experience is not necessary for beginners since this skill set can be learned relatively quickly at the basic level. The best place to find a male tandem partner is out in the lineup where you can see them actually surfing!

What to look for in an ideal female tandem partner

Female tandem partners should be athletic and petite, and ideally have some sort of background in acrobatics, gymnastics, dance, cheer, and/or yoga. The average female partner at the professional level is under 5'2" and around 110 lbs, although acrobatic skill potential is more important than just size alone. Recreationally, female tandem partners vary greatly in height and weight. Surfing experience is not required for beginners, although water experience and comfort in the ocean are helpful. Ideas on places to find a female tandem partner are at a dance studio, gymnastics gym and/or acro-yoga groups.

Some advice on tandem partnerships

Just like in any relationship, good communication skills and compatibility (both in physical ability and lifestyle) are important for a strong tandem partnership. Both partners in a team should have similar goals whether it's to surf just for fun or to advance to a competitive level. The sport of tandem surfing has its fair share of couples, whether dating or married. However, the majority of tandem teams who surf together either recreationally or professionally have separate families and/or significant others who support their tandem surfing partnerships. The choice is yours!
